Brief history

Imbanita Consulting and Engineering (Pty) Ltd (Imbanita) is an erstwhile company of Tata Africa / Tata International. The Tata group began its relationship with the African continent in 1977 with the establishment of Tata Zambia. In 1994, the Tata group inaugurated Tata Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2006, Tata Africa started a consulting engineering business in association with local BE companies and the globally reputed consulting engineering company Tata Consulting Engineering Ltd. In 2007, Tata Africa / TCE secured and successfully executed a prestigious Eskom 5-year consulting engineering services enabling contract. In 2011 and 2016, Tata Africa / TCE / Arup / Power Engineers secured and successfully executed two back-to-back Eskom 5-year consulting engineering and project management services contracts. In 2017, Imbanita was formed by Tata International, the parent company of Tata Africa, and a local company, and services were consolidated under Imbanita. In 2025, after the exit of Tata International and the local company, the ex-Tata Africa leadership members, who had served the Tata company for more than 30 years, took up the ownership of Imbanita. Since 2006, Imbanita derives its pedigree from the reputed Tata Group companies — Tata Power, Tata Consulting Engineers Ltd. and Tata Projects — bringing the underlying business philosophy of excellence in services and deploying cutting-edge technologies and practices.
